Sailor Saturn / Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon

Why I chose this costume:

Sailor Saturn is the senshi of death and rebirth. She appears halfway through both the anime and manga series, bringing about a wave of destruction only to be reborn in the next arc. As Tomoe Hotaru she is quiet, mature, and a prophet of dreams but when she regains her memory and fully transforms into Sailor Saturn she is very serious and can be deadly. As a side note, she cannot perform any attacks or defense without her glaive.

How I made this costume:

The leotard was the base (I used the one I had from my Sailor Earth cosplay) and the skirt and sailor top were made from scratch. The bows are actually curtain fabric that shimmer black or garnet depending on the light–a perfect medium between the manga version of her bows (garnet) and the anime version (black). The talisman on her chest and chocker were made from Styrofoam and tinfoil. The earrings are also made from scratch with clay and wire and were very light to wear. The headband is made from a gold metal sheet, with a clear gem placed at the center and held on by elastic beneath the unaltered wig. The boots were store bought, but cut, painted and laced by hand. Her glaive was made with PVP pipe, poster board, and foam board, making it light to carry around and also safe as a prop within the convention halls.

Thoughts on this costume:

Sailor Saturn has always been my favorite senshi! I felt we had a lot in common (both Capricorns and ruled by Saturn) and had always wanted to cosplay as her from the moment I learned what cosplay was. This costume was three years in the making from collecting fabrics to researching new techniques, and when I finally finished it I couldn’t have been more proud! I’ll be cosplaying various other versions of this lovely, deadly lady, I promise.
