Sugar, Salt, and Pepper / Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar

Why I chose this costume:

Sugar, Salt, and Pepper are fairies training to be the best weather fairies they can be! Sugar is a snow fairy, Salt is a sun fairy, and Pepper is a wind fairy. The anime takes place in Germany and all the fairies work very hard to discover their “twinkles” and help one another to achieve their second wings.

How I made this costume:

For these costumes I wanted to try something different. I’ve seen them each done multiple times and it seemed everyone stuck with cotton-based fabrics. But I wanted to use fabrics that reflected their elements–Sugar would use crushed velvet and thin fleece, Salt would use thin cotton and polyester, and Pepper would use silks and thin satins.

A lot of firsts took place with the construction of these costumes. From the start I wanted to make EVERYTHING by hand (which included all the accessories–instruments, shoes, gloves, glasses, etc.). It was my first time making three costumes. It was also my first time constructing a costume for a guy and making pants with a working fly and button closer. I worked for about a month on each costume to get them to perfection!

Because I live for the details, the accessories were both a challenge and the best part to create. The shoes felt like slippers on our feet, Pepper’s glasses were wire wrapped in black electrical tape, and our instruments were made with wire, gems, and detailed by hand with a sharpie. The bags were a lot of fun to create and held our instruments along with our personal items in a secret pocket on the back of each bag. Each bag also contained a pack of large, shiny beads that we handed out to our fans as “twinkles”. The wigs were cut and styled with the help from a tutorial to get our “antennae” to come out perfectly. And the waffle was made from two pieces of foam stitched together and covered with black and yellow fabric, which I painted to look like the waffles on the show.

Thoughts on this costume:

We performed in the masquerade and everyone seemed to love our performance. The waffle was certainly the hit of the show! A huge thank you to my brother and sister for being my fellow fairies and going along with my craziness as we marched on stage. I couldn’t have done it without them!
