Moonglow and Nite Sprite / Rainbow Brite
Why I chose this costume:
Moonglow is the only friend of Rainbow Brite’s that helps bring the nighttime. With the help of Nite Sprite, they spread the night sky and stars over the land.
How I made this costume:
I bought a blue leotard and made the rest. The skirt is “wrong-side” blue satin sewn with pink trim stuffed with cotton batting and worn over a small hoop skirt I altered. The top white maid skirt was a blast to make and I love how it came out. The crescent moon is hand-cut sparkle foamie cut and sewn in place. The white cuffs were added to the leotard. The headband was bought and I glued a hand-cut white sparkle foamie star with ribbons to it. I had to cut bangs into the wig, but it was perfect otherwise! The shoes were originally black and I spray painted them blue, hand-painted the souls pink, and hand-cut and glued little pink stars to the straps. The stockings were bought, but I added the pink rolls to the top with cotton batting.
Nite Sprite was a fun project! As most of the characters in the series have sprites that help them with their chores and activities, everyone in the group who had a sprite found theirs through ebay and purchased them to complete their cosplay. Moonglow also has a sprite–Nite Sprite–but since she was never made as a larger doll, her sprite was never crafted at all! I had to have Nite Sprite accompany this cosplay, so I bought a Champ Sprite on ebay. Using a mix of spray paint and fabric dye, I was able to change his fur color from blue to dark blue/indigo. I spent a few hours brushing out his fur to make him soft and huggable! I then spray painted his face, arms, and legs to match the color of the reference image I had and I went back and hand-painted the details. I finished off his face with a bit of real blush mixed with a dab of acrylic paint for his rosy cheeks, and sealed him with matte spray paint. His star antennae were cut into the shape of moons and hand-stitched to finish them off. Then I took my crafting one step further and made his star belt from elastic band, craft foam for the buckle, and felt for the star pouch. Nite Sprite is adorable!
