Why I chose this costume:

Cyrus is an alpaca and a maker in the games. He can be paid to change the colors and patterns of your items in Animal Crossing New Leaf and is just a great guy overall. He’s very in love with his wife, Reese, and together they run a little shop called ReTail–a hot spot in the game. Jelfish wanted to cosplay as Reese and I offered to be her Cy-guy for convention-bounding.

How I made this costume:

I already owned the shirt, jeans and shoes. I bought a pair of black gloves to mirror his black hooves. I used blue cotton fabric to construct the apron and sewed red felt “x”‘s in place. I bought the biggest buttons I could find at Joann’s and added those to the straps of the apron, though they weren’t actually holding the straps in place. I made the pick heart logo at the base of the apron using felt as well and sewed this into place. Even though the apron doesn’t have a pocket in-game, I added one and I think it adds more realism and functionality to the overall look.

I created a bunch of bell bags for my little group as well and we used those to carry around our personal items (phones, wallets, etc.). I also made matching ears for myself and Jelfish to wear for our finished looks.

The makeup was fun to do and the first time I had colored my eyebrows for a character. That was an interesting process and I found that you really need heavily pigmented eyeshadow in order to complete that look. I used an eyebrow pencil for his cheek freckles, nose color and upper lip.

I did use a binder for this cosplay and I didn’t wear it for too long. I also made sure my apron was a bit loose to cover my shapes and give me a more masculine appearance overall. Makeup helped with this as well! I styled two different wigs for Cyrus and the one I love best is the second one, a lighter blue color and much better styled.

Thoughts on this costume:

I love Cyrus as a cosplayer and maker myself, I feel we have a lot in common. He’s really easy to recognize with his apron and blue color, more so when I have Reese nearby. This is a very comfortable cosplay and one I feel like I’ve worn the most since making it.
