Why I chose this costume:

I’ve been wanting to create a holiday-inspired dress for some time, but I wanted it to be warm enough for the colder weather and also simple enough to double as a holiday cosplay for any character if I decided to wear it as a Christmas cosplay. This design fit both of those requirements and matched my fashion sketch perfectly!

How I made this costume:

I bought three yards of red crushed velvet, three yards of red 2-way stretch polycotton and four yards of white fluffy fabric for trim. I started by cutting all of the pieces I needed twice–once for the actual dress and once for the lining inside. Then I cut the fur trim for the wrists and bottom hem of the dress. I sewed the polycotton dress first, then completed the crushed velvet one. After fitting them together, I added the white fur trim and pinned the dressed together, then sewed them to create one, finished dress.

I had drawn out a cape/bolero as well, so I used the remaining white fur and the reverse side of what was left of the crushed velvet and sewed the two together, creating a lined bolero that I can wear while outdoors. To add a little extra fun, I made two red bows and attached white pom-poms to the loose ends, then sewed one bow to the bolero and one bow to the dress. The final piece is simply everything I wanted. And I made the whole thing in one day!

Thoughts on this costume:

Not only is this dress adorable and perfect for the holidays, it’s super comfortable and would look great for any holiday-inspired characters’ look. I’m so proud of this outfit. One of the other perks is that I made the entire thing while on a crafting video call with some friends many states away–it was super fun to watch them work and catch up over the sound of our sewing machines and our creative buzz.
