Moondancer / My Little Pony

  • Original Designs and Other

Why I chose this costume:

After seeing a group of girls dress as their favorite My Little Pony for a convention, I thought it would be a cute idea to try for myself. I did some research on original 1980’s My Little Ponies and found Moondancer to be my favorite as one that hasn’t been done before. Here is her bio straight from the package:

Moondancer was sleeping peacefully. Awakening with a start, she found Twilight beside her. “Cotton Candy is missing!” said Twilight. “Have you seen her?” “Cotton Candy should go on a diet,” yawned Moondancer. “She ate my favorite bluegrass and my prettiest wild flowers. I put her in hibernation until winter!” Twilight was stunned. “Free her from the spell, Moondancer. Her friends are worried!” “Is it winter already?” teased Moondancer. But she freed Cotton Candy from the spell and even called the west wind to give her a ride home.

How I made this costume:

I decided that Moondancer should have a shirt with billowing sleeves, and a skirt of many layers that would have her symbol in it. I wanted a long wig and (sticking to the idea of the girls who had inspired me) I would use a boa for the tail. I set to work and in three days was able to create the look I wanted.

I used a spandex white fabric for the entire dress. The symbols were cut from felt and painted with sparkle paint for a glittery shine. The tail was inserted into the skirt and held in place with a loose knot. The wig was store bought and altered using thin paint to create the purple stripe down the center. Two ears and a unicorn horn were made from white polar fleece and batting and sewn directly into the wig, making them stand up perfectly.

Thoughts on this costume:

I had fun dressed as Moondancer and even had the original My Little Pony with me as my reference. I may look into designing another one soon.
